Scriptural References Chapter 6

Question 1:

Romans 12:1
1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual[a] act of worship.

Question 2:

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Question 3:

1 Corinthians 9:23-27
23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Question 4:

Hebrews 12:1-3
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Question 5:

1 Timothy 4:7-10
7Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance 10(and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.

My Relationship Blueprint

Here is My Relationship Vision Statement:

My Relationships are balanced and purposeful. I spend time with God, and allow some time for myself so that I can be filled and fueled, ready to give. My relationship with my spouse is intimate, joyful and Christ-centered. We have daily devotions, talk often, have fun together, plan our future together, and are best friends. Next to God, my spouse has first priority in my life. I balance all other relationships with God-centered priorities. I seek God's guidance daily as I relate to my spouse, family, friends, and co-workers. I strive to be there for others when they need me most. I look for opportunities to encourage others by praying for them or sharing God's Word with them. I make it my goal to be a positive influence and example to everyone God puts in my life.

Now, on to my physical blueprint...

Balancing my portfolio

The gist of Chapter 5 is that we all have a "portfolio" of relationships, which include our spouse, children, parents, siblings, and friends. And we need to develop strategies to keep these relationships strong and healthy. It also says that when we review our portfolio, we may notice certain relationships that are missing, or have been allowed to become distant, and we need to develop strategies for cultivating those relationships.

In my case, spouse and children are missing. I guess I was kind of put off by the concept that I need to "develop a strategy" to find a spouse. Although I'm quite capable of coming up with ways to meet people and find dates, I'm really quite weary of "trying this person out" and "trying that person out". It tends to lead to a lot of disappointment and frustration when things don't work out. I'd rather subscribe to another philosophy that says, "Wait on God"... "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart...Trust in God to provide". I've been wanting to put this whole "finding a husband thing" in God's hands, figuring that when I'm ready and the man He has for me is ready, He'll bring us together. But the chapter seems to indicate that unless I do something, things won't change for me.

I shared this in small group, and was told that it's okay to wait on God as long as I'm not being too passive about it. I've got to make sure to be obedient to what God tells me to do, because I'll never know where I might meet that right person. Another person shared that it might be helpful if I start praying for my future husband, that is, not praying to meet them, but praying for them as if they were already in my life.

It occurred to me at that moment that I really have not been consistent about praying for a husband. Too much of my mental energy is spent reliving hurts of the past or feeling discouraged and negative, thinking I'll never find anyone. And this is probably what is holding me back. Someone else shared with me the verse...

Matthew Ch 7:7-11
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. "Or what man is there among you whom, if his son ask for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he ask for a fish, will give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in Heaven give good things to them that ask Him?"

It's a good thing to want a husband, and I shouldn't doubt that if I ask for it, I will receive it. Because God is good, and He gives good gifts to His children. I also know somewhere in the bible it says that Jesus said, "You do not have because you do not ask", if someone reading this knows which verse this is, please leave a comment.

Anyway, I guess my stepping stones to finding a spouse are:
  1. Stop waisting time dwelling on negative thoughts and past hurts
  2. Be clear about the non-negotiables that I need in a husband
  3. Believe someone like that is out there for me
  4. Pray daily about finding him and pray for God to bless him
  5. Respond to God's leading as I make myself available, approachable, and as I notice others

Relationship chapter

Small group was awesome as usual tonight. I admit though, I'm a bit behind. I did read the chapter, listen to the CD, and answer most of the bible study questions. But I haven't even begun to write out my relationship blueprint or fill out my personal life cards. So I'll need to catch up! And I gotta remember to bring snacks next week. R is bringing something salty, so I've gotta remember to bring something sweet. (Maybe my York Peppermint Brownies if I have time enough to make them. Otherwise, it's something from Publix Bakery. We'll see.)

I'm going to post here my answer to question 1 of the bible study, that I was able to share in group as well. Regarding Ephesians 5:22-33, it asks "What is Paul's instructions to husbands and wives in these verses?". This passage reminds me of an earlier verse in Ephesians, namely chapter 4 verse 3, where it says "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." The husband and wife are one flesh, just as the church is one body, and we're called to one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all. The "bond of peace" verse 3 mentions, is what is obtained for us when we submit to one another out of reverence for Christ as scripture commands us in verse 5:21.

Scriptural references from Chapter 5

I've spent this past week trying to get back up and running after my computer blew a mother board. I've got a new computer now, a Compaq Presario, that has all kinds of nifty little gadgets on it that I haven't quite figured out how to use yet. I used to be up on all this technology stuff, but I have to admit, lately it's been getting tough just to figure out how to program my cell phone.

Anyway, here are the scriptural references to Chapter 5:

Question 1:

Ephesians 5:22-33
22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing[
a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."[b] 32This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Question 2:

Psalm 127:3-5
3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.
4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.
5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

Question 3:

Deuteronomy 6:1-9
1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you.
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [
a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Ephesians 6:1-4
1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2"Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3"that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."[a] 4Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Question 4:

Exodus 20:12
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

Question 5:

Proverbs 13:20
He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

2 Corinthians 6:14
14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

My Spiritual Blueprint

I got up extra early this morning to mull this one over (and pray about it too, of course), so here is the first draft of my Spiritual Vision Statement:

As a person of faith, I daily surrender to God's will for my life. I seek Him first thing each morning to worship Him, to meditate on His Word, to pray and to allow Him to guide my steps. I trust Him with every area of my life. I serve Him in such a way that I draw others to Him. My greatest desire is to glorify Him in all that I say and do.

Red Jeep Cherokees

I have never had any desire to ever purchase a red Jeep Cherokee, or any model or color of Jeep for that matter. I'm into really fuel efficient cars (especially with today's gas prices), so I've been sticking with Toyota Corollas since 1990. Needless to say, I never really noticed Jeep Cherokees until now. I've noticed Jeep Wranglers, 'cuz they're kind of unique-looking, but Cherokees don't look all that different from all the other SUVs you see on the road, so I've never paid any attention to them. But when given the assignment last week to find red Jeep Cherokees, I found 11 of them. And even now, I'm still noticing Jeep Cherokees. I can't seem to stop. They just keep popping up all over the place!

I think the purpose of this exercise was to show us how powerful it is to set goals and focus on them. Doing these 2 things can actually help cause your goals to manifest themselves, because you're training your brain to look for opportunities. We were given a goal to find red Jeep Cherokees. We were given a picture of one to place on our dashboard, so that we could focus on that goal. It didn't take long for our brains to be trained to look for Jeeps as we were driving around. Thus the goal was accomplished multiple times over.

If this can work for a vehicle you're not even interested in buying, imagine how it can work on the goals you're most passionate about. That's why it's important to write your goals down, review them daily, commit them to memory, and lift them up in prayer. Then as long as your goals are also in alignment with God's will for your life, they will be made manifest.

Scriptural References for Chapter 4

Scriptural References for Chapter 4

Question 1

1 Corinthians 12: 1-31
1Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[
a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
12The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13For we were all baptized by[
c] one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[
d]? Do all interpret? 31But eagerly desire[e] the greater gifts.

Question 2

1 Peter 4:10-11
10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 11If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Question 3

1 Timothy 4:12-16
12Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
15Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Question 4

Hebrews 5:12-6:1
12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Hebrews 6
1Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[a] and of faith in God,

A View From The Porch Swing

I've been kind of 'out of it' during the last few days, because I've been recovering from a bad chest cold. I'm even missing small group tonight so that my coughing and sneezing doesn't infect the other members. So I thought I'd take this time to declare some thoughts on Practical Exercise 2, which says, "Imagine you're at the end of your life, at age 75 or 85 or 95...You're sitting on your porch swing looking back on your life...what are the things that you will want to have accomplished by then....Try to focus on the non-negotiables of your life, the things that you really must have in order to avoid any trace of disappointment....

Well first off, I'll want to feel confident that the plan and purpose God had for my life was at least to some extent, accomplished. Even if He only reveals His plan for me step by step, little by little, so that I'm not able to ever see the whole vision laid out before me, I'll want to feel confident that there were several times throughout my life where He called me to be obedient to certain tasks, and I was. I want to feel confident that when I see my Lord face to face, I'll hear Him say, "Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant!"

Second, I know that my maker is my husband (Isaiah 54) and all that. And I've been single for almost 43 years. I get by okay, and I can get by okay being single another 43 years or even longer if I have to. But to "avoid any trace of disappointment" in my life, I will want to have the experience of marriage. Not that I need a husband to validate me or complete me or anything like that. I just WANT that experience. I know it's not all roses and romance. I know it's a lot of hard work to keep a marriage strong and healthy. But like Pastor Greg says, marriage is for practicing our relationship with God - and I don't want to miss out on the practicing. I want to learn how to really love and be a blessing to someone, not just to receive the blessing back, and not just to have a great relationship, but to also learn how to really love and be a blessing to God's heart.

Third, I will want to have managed my finances well enough to retire with dignity, and not a lot of worry.

Fourth, I will want to have kept my self in good physical condition and made my health a priority, so that when I retire, I'm not dealing with a lot of physical ailments. Instead, I can balance my retirement years with travel and leisurely pursuits along with actively working at whatever ministry God calls me to during those years.

Fifth, I'll want to feel that this world was made a better place because I was in it.

I'm kind of tired, and I can't think of any more...so I'm going to bed. Good night y'all.

Scriptural References for Chapter 3

Here are the scriptures related to the Bible Study and Group Discussion questions for chapter 3:

Question 1:
Matthew 21:21
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.

Question 2:
Mark 2:1-5
A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

Luke 7:2-10
There a centurion's servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, "This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue." So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Question 3:
1 Samuel 17:33-37
Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth." But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you."

Question 4:
Philippians 3:13-14
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

The Dream I Dream

Practical Exercise 1 says to list at least 25 things that I would dream of doing during my lifetime. What would I want for my life if I knew I couldn't fail? If money, status, etc. were no object? If I could just reach for the stars....what would my wildest dreams be? Ok, this might get kind of silly. In fact, it probably will. But hey, 'wildest dreams' aren't supposed to be based in reality. This is just an examination of where my heart is. So here goes:

  1. My first dream addresses the seemingly big hole in my life. I dream of meeting and marrying a godly man - one who really has a heart for the Lord. He's kind, generous, trustworthy and respectful - and looks alittle like Antonio Banderas.
  2. I would like to just go off for several months on a road trip across the United States and visit all the places I've never been to before.
  3. I would like to take a trip completely around the world.
  4. I would like to handglide across the mountains or parasail over the oceans.
  5. I would like to learn how to scuba dive, and explore the world's most beautiful coral reefs.
  6. I would like a job that is aligned with my purpose and passion, instead of one that doesn't really hold my interest, and I have to struggle to stay focused, and deal with a lot of stress and deadlines.
  7. I would like to find a way to earn multiple streams of revenue from the internet.
  8. I would like to see a need, and develop a product or method that solves the need, and let that become a basis for my own business.
  9. I would like to make a contribution to society that sets me in history.
  10. I would like to have enough money so that I'm working to accomplish my purpose, not to pay bills.
  11. I would like to live in a house mortgage-free, drive a car I paid cash for, and stay totally debt-free.
  12. I would like to abundantly fund my retirement account so that I can enjoy my golden years.
  13. I would like to become known in my community as someone who makes a difference.
  14. I would like to stay physically fit into my golden years.
  15. I would like to stay free of degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
  16. I would like to fully understand the specific reasons why God made me and the purposes he has for me.
  17. I would like to be seen as serving faithfully as a leader in my church.
  18. I would like to develop a musical talent, such as singing or playing a musical instrument, and be able to share it with my church.
  19. I would like to be the one sought out by people when they need encouragement and prayer.
  20. I would like to be the one sought out by people when they need to understand biblical truths.
  21. I would like the opportunity to lead multiple people to the Lord.
  22. I would like to flow in the spiritual gifts of prophecy, healings, miracles, tongues, interpretations, etc.
  23. I would like to maintain a core group of friends throughout my lifetime.
  24. If I would get married, I want to stay that way, and be a blessing to my husband.
  25. If I would have children, I would want to raise them to be godly, and encourage them to seek their purpose in life and pursue it.

Learning to encourage

My small group leader usually calls everyone in the group once a week to pray for us. If you're home, he'll ask you if there is something specific you need prayer for. If you're not there, he'll leave a generalized prayer for you on your voicemail. Both he and his wife are awesome godly people, and I'm so grateful to have this opportunity to be mentored and encouraged by them. The other night I had to do my grocery shopping after work, and I was tired. It had been a long day. But when I got home, I got to listen to a message from my group leader, where he referred to me as "his fellow encourager", and he said he was proud of me because he sees that I'm starting to walk in my spiritual gifts. That was so uplifting to me, and helped me to realize that despite difficulties and stress, I'm still on a path that's leading somewhere. We had a talk earlier about spiritual gifts, and discovered that we share 'exhortation' and 'teaching' as our top 2 spiritual gifts. So, God knew what he was doing placing me into this small group. He's given me an example to follow.

But I still need to develop my gifts a great deal before I'm truly walking in them. That's why I decided to take some classes that my church is offering, called Encourager Training I, II and III.
I attended the first class in Encourager Training I last night. It covers topics such as how to provide comfort to those that are hurting, how to recognize and remove aloneness, and how to be an active listener. Last night, when we were going through the class material, I realized some areas where I need to improve. Sometimes when someone is obviously hurting, I'll avoid that person because I'll feel a sense of inadequacy, and think "What could I say that would make any difference?" Other times, I won't even notice people around me who may be hurting, because I'm too wrapped up in my own stuff. These are things I need to work on, and the training should give me methods to overcome these things.

I think I can I think I can

Chapter 3 was definitely written for people like me. It's all about cultivating belief and maintaining focus. Belief has been critical for me. As I've stated in earlier posts, I've had a hard time believing that God really has made me for a unique purpose that I alone can fulfill. Although it's still kind of fuzzy as to what that actually looks like, I'm starting to let go of that disbelief.

I really like how the authors present such a balanced view of this subject. Yes, Jesus said that if we have enough faith we can move mountains. And many times, the only thing that limits us is our own lack of belief that we can accomplish our goals. But on page 46, it also says,

"Of course, belief is not a magic wand. You can't just 'believe' God
into doing something that's not part of His plan. More belief will not suddenly make things work out like you wanted. God made man with certain limits. However, it's also true that man often puts even greater limits on himself. So when it comes time to set your goals, you must be certain that they are neither hindered by fear or short-sightedness, nor should you become mesmerized by greed and self-centeredness."

According to new age philosophy, we can 'become' whatever we 'believe', as if there are no limits imposed upon us by our creator. I've even heard certain TV evangelists espouse a "believe it - receive it" or "name it - claim it" theology that rings shallow, because it doesn't seem to take into account God's plan for us. Believing in ourselves and having a positive attitude is great as long as it is balanced by an understanding that we need to remain in God's will. Otherwise, we are susceptible to seeking our own glory and falling into greed, selfishness and other temptations.

So for me to get started, I need to...

  1. Believe that God really does have a unique vision for me
  2. Believe that He will reveal it to me
  3. Believe that He will equip me to accomplish it
  4. Break down the vision into small baby steps that will become the goals I need to focus on

More on all of this later.... I've got to get ready for work...

Gotta work on the Faithful Steward thing

Well - I was able to finish the questions on Chapter 2 during lunch time at work yesterday, and went to small group last night. This has been an important chapter, and I'm glad they included it at the beginning to set the proper tone for the rest of the study. Like Pastor Greg said on Sunday: Life doesn't justify living. It's Eternity that justifies living, and before we set in our minds any plans, dreams or visions, we need to make sure we've accounted for Eternity.

After worship time in our small group last night, we had a little quiet time to allow God to speak to us. Many of us wrote down what we felt God speaking to our hearts about. God convicted my heart about submitting to my employer as a faithful steward. It's not that I haven't been doing my job, I just have been dragging my feet doing it. I haven't been doing it with enthusiasm, as unto the Lord, as it says in Colossians 3:22-24. I need a better attitude, because even though the job I have now may not be my passion or God's ultimate goal for me, I need to prove myself faithful where I'm at, in order to move ahead into the things of God and into the vision and purpose that God has prepared in advance for me.

Well, I better get to the gym.... I need to get my heart pumping oxygen into my brain before I can start my workday with enthusiasm.

"A Life God Rewards" Scriptural References

Yesterday after church was I so busy, I didn't get a chance to blog. Pastor Greg gave a great sermon though, about living for the line (eternity) and not the dot (earthly life). He also asked the congregation if they knew what the purpose of marriage was. I thought he was going to answer it by saying the purpose of marriage is to raise of family. But he didn't. He said the purpose of marriage is to practice our relationship with God for eternity. I thought that was awesome, and so true! I just pray that God eventually brings me the man He wants me to practice on.

Anyway, I'm up early before work. I still have to do the discussion questions at the end of Chapter 2. Small group meets tonight instead of Wednesday night, because of First Wednesday service. There are a bunch of scripture references related to "A Life God Rewards" taken from Bruce Wilkinson's book by that title. I thought it might be helpful to post them all in one place so that we can easily see what God has to say on the subject:

Concerning Spirtual acts
Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Concerning submitting to your employer
Matthew 24:45-47
Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

Ephesians 6: 5-8
Servants (slaves), be obedient to those who are your physical masters, having respect for them and eager concern to please them, in singleness of motive and with all your heart, as [service] to Christ [Himself]-- Not in the way of eye-service [as if they were watching you] and only to please men, but as servants (slaves) of Christ, doing the will of God heartily and with your whole soul; Rendering service readily with goodwill, as to the Lord and not to men,
Knowing that for whatever good anyone does, he will receive his reward from the Lord, whether he is slave or free.

Colossians 3:22-24
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Concerning self-denial in His service
Matthew 16:24-27
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

Concerning serving those in need
Mark 9:41
I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

Concerning suffering for the Lord's name and reputation
Luke 6:22
Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

Concerning the sacrifices you make for God
Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Matthew 19:29
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

Concerning sharing what you have to give to further His Kingdom
Matthew 6:3-4
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Timothy 6:18-19
Command them (the rich) to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

There are also a few more verses related to questions 2 and 3 of this week's lesson. I'll go ahead and post them here as well:

For Question 2:

1 Corinthians 3:11-15
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

Matthew 16:27
For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

For Question 3:

Matthew 25:14-30
Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'
His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'
His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'
His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
